Whether it is a first passport for a job abroad, a renewal before Umrah or a child's passport for a family trip, the process is now mostly online. It is simple when your documents match, and slow when they do not. This guide explains the steps for people in Thanjavur district and across Tamil Nadu.

Normal or Tatkal: which should you choose?

Normal is the standard scheme and costs less. Tatkal is for urgent travel: the application is processed faster and you pay an additional Tatkal fee on top of the normal fee. Tatkal also asks for additional identity documents.

  • Choose normal if you are planning ahead and have a few weeks.
  • Choose Tatkal only if your travel is genuinely urgent, such as a confirmed job joining date.

Current fees for each booklet size and age group are published on the official Passport Seva website, passportindia.gov.in. Always pay only through the official portal.

Which passport office handles Thanjavur district?

Applications from Thanjavur district come under the Regional Passport Office, Tiruchirappalli. When you book, you choose an available Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) for your appointment.

Step by step

  1. Register on the Passport Seva portal.
  2. Fill the application: fresh or re-issue, normal or Tatkal, 36 or 60 pages. Enter names and dates exactly as on your documents.
  3. Pay the fee online and book an appointment at a PSK or POPSK.
  4. Attend the appointment with originals: documents are verified, and your photo and fingerprints are taken.
  5. Police verification: the local police verify your address and details, before or after issue depending on your case.
  6. Passport dispatch: it is sent to you by Speed Post. Track it with your file number.

Documents usually needed

  • Proof of date of birth: birth certificate, school leaving or transfer certificate, or another accepted document.
  • Proof of present address: Aadhaar, bank passbook with photo, utility bill and other accepted documents.
  • For renewal: your old passport, with self-attested copies of the first and last pages and any observation page.
  • For minors: the parents' passports or ID, and the annexure signed by both parents.

Mistakes that delay passports

  • Name spelt differently on Aadhaar, school certificate and the application (for example, initials before or after the name).
  • Different date of birth on two documents.
  • An address proof that does not match the address you gave.
  • Not mentioning a previous passport or an old application.
  • Not being at home, or not having documents ready, when the police come for verification.

If your documents do not match, fix that before you apply, for example by correcting your Aadhaar. It is much faster than fixing it after the passport office raises an objection.

Renewing early is a good idea

Many countries need at least 6 months of passport validity to issue a visa or let you board, so renew well before your passport expires, and before it runs out of pages. You can apply for re-issue when it is close to expiry, or when it is full.
