Almost every family in the Thanjavur and Thiruvarur belt has someone in the UAE. Sooner or later, parents, wives and children want to visit them in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi. The good news: a UAE visit visa is one of the simpler visas for Indians. The bad news: small mistakes still cause delays and rejections. This guide explains how it works from Tamil Nadu, in plain words.
Which UAE visit visa do you need?
For a family visit or holiday, most travellers from India use a tourist or visit visa, issued for a fixed stay:
- 30-day visit visa: the most common choice for a short family visit or holiday.
- 60-day visit visa: for longer stays, for example parents visiting for a few weeks around a delivery or a festival.
- Multiple-entry visas: for people who travel to the UAE often.
There is also a separate job seeker visa for people who want to go to the UAE to look for work. A visit visa must not be used to work; working on a visit visa breaks UAE law and can lead to fines and a ban.
Do you even need a visa in advance?
Indian passport holders who already hold a valid US visa or green card, or a residence permit from the UK or the European Union, can usually get a visa on arrival in the UAE for a short stay. Everyone else needs a visa issued before they fly. Check the current rule before you travel, because eligibility conditions are updated from time to time.
Documents for a UAE visit visa
The list is short, but every item must be clear and correct:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter the UAE. A clear colour scan of the front and back pages.
- Recent photo with a plain white background, face clearly visible, no shadows or filters. Old or edited photos are a common reason for delays.
- Return or onward air ticket, or at least a confirmed itinerary.
- Where you will stay: a hotel booking, or if you are staying with family, their address and often a copy of their passport and Emirates ID.
- Sometimes, bank statements or other supporting documents, depending on your profile and the sponsor.
If a relative who lives in the UAE is sponsoring your visa, they may apply from their side. Either way, your documents need to be in order.
How the process works, step by step
- Choose the visa: 30 or 60 days, single or multiple entry, based on your plans.
- Prepare the documents: passport scan, photo, ticket and stay details, checked for clarity and correct spelling.
- Submit the application through an authorised channel such as an airline, a licensed travel agent or your sponsor in the UAE.
- Wait for the decision: most visit visas are processed within a few working days when the documents are complete.
- Receive the e-visa by email. Print it and carry it with your passport.
How long does it take?
When everything is in order, a UAE visit visa usually comes within a few working days. Apply at least two weeks before your travel date so there is time to fix any problem. Around Eid, school holidays and the end of the year, applications are heavy, so apply earlier.
Common mistakes that cause rejection or delay
- Name mismatch between the passport and the application or ticket (for example, initials written differently).
- Passport validity of less than 6 months.
- Poor-quality photo or passport scan: blurred, cropped, with shadows or taken on a coloured background.
- Previous overstay or violation in the UAE that was never settled.
- Applying through unknown agents who promise a visa "with job". A visit visa is not a work visa.
At the airport
Carry your passport, a printed copy of the visa, your return ticket and your stay details. Immigration officers may ask how long you will stay and where. Answer simply and honestly. Remember the UAE has strict rules on medicines: carry only what you need, in original packing, with a prescription.
Overstaying is expensive
If you stay beyond the date on your visa, fines are charged for every extra day, and a serious overstay can lead to a ban. If your plans change, ask about extending your visa before it expires.
